Scorpion Crawls out from Penrhyn Bananas
STAFF at Somerfield in Penrhyn Bay were shocked to find an alive
scorpion nestling in a bunch of bananas last week.
Nigel Sparks, 53, who found the scorpion was surprised by the
discovery but promptly jumped into action.
"When it came out of the bananas I realised instantly that it was
alive as its tail came up," said Nigel. "I quickly flicked the
scorpion into a plastic container using a pen.
"The scorpion was taken off to Leeds to be identified, and the lady
who took it away said she thought it was quite poisonous. I haven't
heard anything back yet."
Having worked with fruit and veg for many years, the nasty encounter
was not the first Nigel, from Llandudno Junction, has experienced.
"I was bitten by a tarantula once before, but luckily its poison
didn't really harm me although my hand was bleeding for hours," said
Nigel.
Anthony Owens, duty manager at the store, confirmed that the pest was
found in the warehouse.
"The scorpion crawled out a bunch of bananas from Ghana," said
Anthony. "Thanks to the efforts of warehouse staff like Nigel,
customers need not worry about finding any bugs on the shop floor!"
